Mexican Steampunk!
My Mexican steampunk story “Distant Deeps or Skies” went up at the webzine Expanded Horizons. It is set in the Porfiriato, in Mexico City. This was the story that got me a semi-finalist place at Writers of the Future, but no cigar. It floated around, lonely, looking for a home before meeting the folks at Expanded Horizons.
Several of my stories have a historical bent:
- “Shedding Her Own Skin” available at Fantasy Magazine (Revolutionary Mexico)
- “Candles for the Dead”, which appeared in Tales of Moreauvia (also early 20th century Mexico)
- “Of Fire and Time” in Zahir (Conquista to 18th century)
- “Jaguar Woman” which you can read in Shimmer (early post-Conquista)
- “B’alam”, also published in Reflection’s Edge (Pre-Columbian)
“Bed of Scorpions” is part of the Tesseracts Thirteen anthology. While not explicit in its time period setting, it is not contemporary either (early 20th century Mexico).
Three of the 12 stories that are looking for a home right now are historical fiction. All of the stories I have shelved because they wouldn’t sell are also historical: alternate Tenochtitlan, 18th century alternate Caribbean vampires and 13th century Venice.
Interestingly, I have yet to do anything in The Tudor period, which I am well-versed in.
